St. Cloud, MN – The St. Cloud Rox could not bring out a victory Sunday afternoon as they fell to the Willmar Stingers 5-1 in the continuation of last night’s suspended game, and 5-3 in the final game of the weekend at Joe Faber Field. The two losses puts the Rox at 4-2 on the season, with all six games being North Division matchups.
Saturday’s contest saw Rox starting pitcher Reese Gregory throw the first five innings of the game, tallying eight strikeouts and allowing just two hits as his tenure was cut short by the postponement of the final four innings due to rain, earning him the no decision as the game was scoreless after five. Will Craig picked up the pitching duties when the game resumed this afternoon in the sixth inning, going three innings for St. Cloud while striking out four and giving up one run on two hits.
The Rox posted the first run of the game in the sixth inning as Eric Loxtercamp scored off a single and throwing error by Willmar during Bradley Strong’s at-bat to give the Rox their first and only run of the game. The Stingers tied it up in the eighth as Sean Beesley singled to bring in Dan Motl and even the score at one.
Willmar tacked on four more in the top of the ninth off Dalton Sawyer, who gave up one earned run in 0.2 innings pitched, picking up his first loss of the season (0-1) as the Stingers took game one 5-1. Bradley Strong ended the contest going 2-for-3 to lead the Rox in the loss.
Game two saw a pitchers duel between Rox starter Kenny Anderson and Stingers starter Austin Klein as Anderson went the first six innings for St. Cloud, giving up no runs until the sixth where the Stingers put three on the board off four hits in the inning, giving him the loss (0-1). Daniel Martinez came on for the final three innings of game two, giving up two earned runs in the top of the eighth off four hits.
The Rox made a late comeback in game two, scoring three of their own in the bottom of the eighth to bring the game into contention heading into the final inning. The Rox took advantage of four hits in the eighth as they were finally able to get runs on the board off Klein, who was relieved in the eighth by Tyler Hanson, going the final 1.1 innings to earn the save and hand the Rox their second-straight loss.
The Rox now head on the road for a two-game series with Waterloo beginning Monday, June 2nd, playing at 6:35 p.m. both Monday and Tuesday night against the Bucks, before heading back to St. Cloud Wednesday for a mid-week contest with Alexandria at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday’s matchup with the Blue Anchors will be ‘Baseball Cap Giveaway Night’ presented by PrefferedOne, and the first 350 fans will receive a St. Cloud Rox baseball cap.
