Walk Off Home Run from Vazquez Gives Rox Victory

St. Cloud, MN- Boo Vazquez launched a solo home run to end the game in the bottom of the ninth inning and ended the night 2-for-5 as the Rox defeated the Eau Claire Express 7-6 Sunday night at Joe Faber Field. The walk-off victory gives the Rox their third walk off win in the last six days while tallying their fourth walk off victory of the season.

The Rox fell behind early to the Express Sunday night, as starter Reese Gregory allowed four runs to Eau Claire in the first inning coming off five hits. After the first, Gregory was solid from there on out, pitching the next four innings and halting the Express scoring while allowing just two more hits and striking out seven.

St. Cloud answered back with a four-run inning of their own in the third, when four straight at-bats brought in runs for the Rox, capped off by a double from Kade Scivicque off Eau Claire starter Jordan Ruckman that scored Bradley Strong to tie the game at four. That score stayed the same through the middle innings as Rox reliever Ben Lumsden came on in the sixth and recorded two scoreless innings and three strikeouts while Kevin Burgee entered in the eighth for the Rox and struck out two in the inning.

The Rox broke the stalemate in the eighth inning when Morgan Phillips smacked a triple to right center to score Eric Loxtercamp from first and give the Rox the lead. They would add another off Eau Claire reliever Brett Seeburger in the eighth when Bradley Strong brought in Phillips off a bunt to give the Rox a 6-4 lead heading in to the ninth.

Eau Claire would not go down without a fight in the late innings, as Peter Van Gansen singled in the top of the ninth off Burgee to bring in two runs and tie the game at six going in to the bottom of the inning. From there, Seeburger struck out Scivicque to start the ninth, before Vazquez ripped the game-winning home run to right field to bring the score to its final clip, 7-6. The home run was Vazquez’s second of the year, giving the Rox a league-leading 27 on the season, including six straight games with a home run as they have totaled nine in that span.

Past Vazquez, Morgan Phillips finished the night 2-for-4 with his first triple of the season, while Will Craig and Charles Galiano each recorded two hits as well to lead the Rox, who totaled 12 in the game.
