Mankato, MN- The St. Cloud Rox came back with in a win in game two of Monday’s doubleheader with Mankato, defeating the MoonDogs 3-2 at Franklin Rogers Park to conclude the first half of the 2014 season. With the win, St. Cloud’s first half ends with a record of 19-16, putting them in fifth place of the Northwoods League’s North Division.
The Rox pitching staff used three different hurlers in the win over the MoonDogs, as Austin Caspersen started the game and went six innings while allowing two runs on five hits to pick up the victory (3-2). From there, relievers Matt Rodgers and Dalton Sawyer did not allow a hit in the final three innings, as Rodgers went two innings and struck out three before Sawyer came in for the ninth, striking out two in the inning to earn his second save of the season.
Offensively, the Rox tallied three runs on eight hits, breaking the 0-0 tie in the top of the third as Seth Heck doubled to start the inning, his fifth of the season, and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Kade Scivicque to make it 1-0. After Caspersen allowed two runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Rox came back with a run apiece in the fifth and sixth innings to retake the lead, which proved to be the decider.
Scivicque knocked in another run in the fifth off a single that brought in Garrett McMullen, who doubled earlier in the inning, and the game-winning run came across in the sixth off a single from Heck to score Kyle Thornell. Heck finished game two of Monday’s doubleheader 2-for-4 with a run scored an RBI, while McMullen added three hits to lead the Rox offensively.
