Rochester, MN- The St. Cloud Rox got past an early-inning deficit Sunday afternoon as they scored five times in the eighth inning to defeat the Rochester Honkers 9-4 at Mayo Field. The Rox trailed 4-2 heading in to the seventh inning, but scored seven runs in the final three innings after being down 3-0 after the first.
The win on the mound went to Tyler Deel (1-0) for the Rox, who threw two shutout innings of relief while not giving up a hit and striking out three. He relieved Austin Caspersen in the seventh, who came in after starting pitcher Josh Taylor surrendered three runs on three hits in the first inning. Caspersen threw the five innings following Taylor and gave up just one run on five hits in the process.
Offensively, the Rox scored two runs in the early stages of the game as Will Craig and Eric Loxtercamp each delivered solo home runs to get the Rox on the board in the second and fifth innings, giving Craig his fourth long ball of the year and Loxtercamp his second. The late-inning rally began with two outs in the seventh inning for the Rox, when Charles Galiano scored on a dropped third strike and Bradley Strong came across during the next at-bat on a wild pitch to tie the game at four.
The Rox then posted five more runs in the eighth, as Kade Scivicque scored on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded, before Galiano doubled to bring in two runs and Strong singled to bring in two more and give the Rox a 9-4 lead. Dalton Sawyer then came on in the ninth for St. Cloud and stranded two runners to give the Rox their second consecutive victory in the second half (2-3).
