Craig Tallies Four Hits as Rox Fall to Border Cats

St. Cloud, MN – Will Craig finished 4-for-5 Thursday night with two doubles and two RBIs but the St. Cloud Rox fell to Thunder Bay 7-6 after the Border Cats denied a late rally at Joe Faber Field. The Rox (17-17, 36-33) erased an early 5-1 deficit set by Thunder Bay and had the game-tying run at third base in the ninth inning but ultimately came up short in the opening game of the two-game series.

After the Border Cats tallied six runs combined on Rox starter Tim Faix (L, 2-4) and reliever Trevor Charpie in the first four innings, the Rox answered back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one-run game. The Rox tallied four hits in the inning and scored the first run off a walk from Clay Ardeeser to score Charles Galiano before Craig smacked his first double of the game to score Morgan Phillips and Liam Bedford. Boo Vazquez then followed suit with an RBI single to make it 6-5 heading in to the sixth.

From there, Charpie managed to subdue the Border Cats as he finished the contest with 5.1 innings pitched while allowing two earned runs and striking out four. The Border Cats picked up one more run in the ninth as Dalton Sawyer came in to finish the inning and did not allow a hit while striking one batter out. Craig then began a two-out rally in the ninth with a double to left center field and later scored on a triple to right center field from Boo Vazquez to make it a one-run game. Vazquez was ultimately stranded at third after Robert Youngdahl struck out to end the game to give the Border Cats the 7-6 victory.

Before the game, Chris Paul was named the 2014 Rox Team MVP as he currently leads the team in batting average (.320), hits (74), runs (40) and home runs (8).
