Duluth, MN – The St. Cloud Rox finished with two runs in the ninth inning Saturday night but it was not enough to complete a comeback as they fell to the Duluth Huskies 5-4 at Wade Stadium. The Rox (18-18, 37-34) continued their offensive surge set in motion Friday night with another 10-plus hit evening on Saturday, but stranded 10 runners on base as they outhit the Huskies 11-10 in the contest.
Austin Caspersen took the start and the loss (5-4) for the Rox as he threw the first five innings while giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out two in the process. After he allowed two runs in the bottom of the third to the Huskies to break the scoreless tie, the Rox got on the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run from Boo Vazquez, his fifth of the season.
Duluth then tallied another run in the fifth before the Rox scored their second run of the game off an RBI single from Eric Loxtercamp to score Seth Heck and make it 3-2. Tyler Peitzmeier came in to relieve Caspersen in the sixth and shut out the Huskies for the first two innings of relief before Duluth scored two more runs in the eighth inning, which brought Dalton Sawyer in to record the final two outs as the Huskies took a three-run lead.
In the ninth, Reese Gregory scored off an error and Loxtercamp came across on a sacrifice fly from Clay Ardeeser, but Duluth closer Steve Villines closed the door after that to pick up the save and give Duluth the 5-4 win. Vazquez led the way offensively with three hits for the Rox Saturday night and Will Craig added two doubles to bring his season total to 11 as Loxtercamp and Gregory each added two hits as well.
