Waterloo, IA—
After gaining a share of first place in the North division after last night's victory, the Rox dropped tonight's game by a final score of 5-3 to the Waterloo Bucks.
The Rox fell behind early, as they trailed 4-0 heading into the top of the 4th inning. Michael Strem (Boston College) led the top of the inning off with a single, and Joe Tietjen (UNC Asheville) followed the Strem single with a double of his own, lacing a fastball over the head of the left fielder to score Strem all the way from first to give the Rox their first run. Tietjen finished the night 3-4 from the plate.
Waterloo pushed their lead to 5-1 entering the 7th inning, when Connor Crane (Mcneese St) tripled to lead off the inning for St. Cloud. Crane later came around to score on a Reese Gregory (SCSU) RBI single.
Erik Martinez (Cal-Berkeley) came on in relief in the 7th for St. Cloud and was dominant on the mound, giving up just one hit in two innings of work.
Trailing 5-2 entering the top of the 9th, Tietjen led off the inning with his 3rd hit of the night, a seeing eye single that found a hole on the left side of the infield. After two Bucks errors loaded the bases for the Rox, Lee Miller (Davidson) hit a sacrifice fly into left field to cut the deficit to just two as Tietjen scored from third.
The comeback effort fell just short, however, as the Rox were unable to score any more runs and lost by a final score of 5-3.
With the loss, the Rox saw their season high winning streak end abruptly at four.
