St. Cloud, MN – The St. Cloud Rox are pleased to announce that three-time Major League Baseball All-Star catcher and World Series champion Terry Steinbach will be in attendance as this year’s opening night guest. Steinbach will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Home Opener presented by Coborn’s on Saturday, June 4th at 7:05 p.m. at Joe Faber Field as the Rox take on the Thunder Bay Border Cats.
In addition to throwing out the first pitch, Steinbach will be signing autographs and taking pictures with fans throughout the night which will feature the season’s first of seven fireworks shows.
Steinbach, a native of New Ulm, Minn., attended the University of Minnesota where he led the Golden Gophers to the 1982 Big Ten title and was named the 1983 Big Ten Player of the Year. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the ninth round of the 1983 amateur draft. He made his major league debut in September of 1986, hitting a home run in his first at bat. He became the Athletics starting catcher the next year, holding that position for 10 seasons. He was an American League All-Star in 1988, 1989 and 1993. In 1989, along with the Athletics he won the World Series title.
After his time with the Athletics, Steinbach spent three season playing for the Minnesota Twins before retiring following the 1999 season. He played in 14 MLB seasons, appearing in 1,546 games, with a .271 batting average, 162 home runs and 745 runs batted in. Steinbach returned to the Twins organization in 2012 serving as the bench coach for two years.
This season will be the Rox fifth playing in St. Cloud. Cy Young award winner Bret Saberhagen, former Twin Jacque Jones, and two-time World Series champions Greg Gagne and Gene Larkin have previously thrown out the first pitch during Rox home openers.
