St. Cloud, Minn. – Logan Salow (Kentucky) turned in a fantastic outing on the mound, but it was not enough as the St. Cloud Rox (4-3, 28-14) were edged by the Mankato MoonDogs (6-3, 28-16) by a final score of 5-1 at Joe Faber Field.
Salow lasted 6.0 innings and struck out nine batters in his start. It was the second most strikeouts the recently named All-Star has had in a game this season, topped only by his first start of the year against Thunder Bay when he sent down 10 batters. Salow leads the Rox with 49 strike outs this season, and is among the league leaders in that category. He was edged by fellow All-Star Ricky Digrugilliers of the MoonDogs who lasted 7.0 innings and struck out six batters.
Mankato would put up single runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead.
Marcus Carson (Kentucky) had the first hit of the night for the Rox with a single in the fourth inning. Carson has now collected hits in five of his last seven games. He also stole a base in the inning.
The Rox run came home in the fifth inning. Denis Karas (Cal Berkeley) led off the inning with a double, followed by a single from Drew Freedman (Nova Southeastern). Karas would score on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Brhet Bewley (University of San Diego).
Chris Martin (Kent State) came on in relief to start the seventh inning and picked up right where Salow left off, striking out three batters in three innings. Martin has struck out a batter in ten of his 11 appearances this year, and multiple batters eight times.
The 12 strikeouts registered by the St. Cloud pitchers ties a season high. Rox pitchers also struck out 12 batters in games against Thunder Bay and Duluth earlier this season.
Mankato brought home three runs in the top of the ninth inning to seal the victory for the visitors. It was just the third loss of the season at Joe Faber Field.
