St. Cloud, Minn. – Fans at the Rock Pile were treated to an instant classic on Monday as the St. Cloud Rox topped the Willmar Stingers 2-1 in the first round of the Northwoods League playoffs.
The Rox move on to the second round of the playoffs on Tuesday, where they will host the Eau Claire Express at 7:05 p.m. at the Rock Pile. Tickets are on sale now and can be found here: http://st-cloud-rox.nwltickets.com/SingleGame/Tickets/SelectSeats/2948
Pitching led the way for both teams in Monday’s contest. Logan Salow (Kentucky) started for the Rox and pitched a gem. He threw 6.0 innings allowing a single run and striking out nine batters. Salow now holds the Rox franchise record for most strikeouts in a single season at 79.
After Salow came out of the game it was the two shutdown relievers for the Rox that got the call. Recently named postseason All-Star Collin Strall (LSU) came on in the seventh inning and threw two hitless innings with three strikeouts.
The ninth belonged to another postseason All-Star, Brian Glowicki (Minnesota). Glowicki allowed just one runner, who reached on an error, and struck out two of the four batters he faced. Glowicki now has a 0.43 ERA this season with 29 strikeouts in 15 games He also tied a franchise record with his 11th save of the year.
The only runs of the game for the Rox came in the second inning. Michael Strem (Boston College) hit a one-out double for the second Rox hit of the game and he was followed by the biggest hit of the night. Webb Bobo (Southeastern Louisiana) snapped a recent cold streak by launching a two-run home run out to right field. It was his third home run of the season.
The Stingers would pull a run back in the fourth, but solid pitching and stingy defense limited Willmar to just two baserunners from the fifth inning on.
The Rox will meet the Eau Claire Express in the second round. Eau Claire defeated Mankato 5-1 on Monday night.
