rox-renew-contract-with-newman-also-add-to-coaching-staff-with-price

St. Cloud, MNThe St. Cloud Rox announced on Thursday they have renewed their contract with Assistant Coach Al Newman.  They also announced the addition of Assistant Coach Riley Price to the staff. Both will work under 2016 Northwoods League Field Manager of the Year Augie Rodriguez who is returning for his sixth season after leading the Rox to a 49-24 record and a second half North Division Championship. Rodriguez signed a two-year contract after the 2015 season.

Newman will continue to work primarily with hitters and infielders along with defensive player alignments.  He is a former first round draft pick of the Montreal Expos after playing college baseball at San Diego State University. He played eight seasons in the major leagues including five with the Minnesota Twins. During his time with the Twins he primarily played the infield and was a member of the 1987 and 1991 World Series teams and one of only seven players to be on both World Series Championships with the Twins.

Following his retirement from baseball in 1992, Newman began his coaching career in the Minnesota Twins organization.  During the 1996 and 1997 seasons he served as the Manager of the Class AA affiliate New Britain Rock Cats.  In 1998 he served as the Bench Coach for the Class AAA affiliate Salt Lake City Buzz and from 1999-2001 as the Manager of the rookie league Gulf Coast League Twins.  In 2002 Newman joined the Twins major league coaching staff as the Third Base Coach, a role he held through the 2005 season. Newman joined the Rox coaching staff prior to the 2016 season.

“I’m very excited to come back for another year and continue the quest for a championship for the St. Cloud community with Augie and the rest of the Rox family next summer,” Newman said.

Joining the coaching staff will be Riley Price, currently an Assistant Coach at Angelo State University.  Over the past two summers he has served as the Head Coach of the Fort Collins Foxes of the Centennial State League, including a 26-4 during the 2016 season. During the spring of 2016 he served as an Assistant Coach at Baker University. Prior to his coaching career, Price played primarily as an infielder at Washburn University, Southern Arkansas University and Allen Community College.

The Rox will open their 6th season of Northwoods League baseball in late May of 2017. Season tickets for the 2017 season are currently on sale. For more information regarding this release please contact the Rox front office at (320) 240-9798 or visit www.stcloudrox.com
