St. Cloud, MN — The Rox have found many different ways to win games this season. Saturday night was different. Trailing going into the bottom of the 6th inning, they found offense in Brendan Illies (North Carolina) who led-off the inning with a double. He scored later after Drew Avans (SE Louisiana) stole second, and a throw that went wide from behind the plate sent the Rox starting catcher home for the tying run.
In the 8th with the game still tied, Matt Tarantino (Pacific) who has completely turned his season around this week, continued his hot streak. He like Illies doubled to start the inning, and scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run after Angelo Altavilla (Nebraska) beat out a throw to 1st base that would have been the third out of the inning.
Tarantino has now had hits in 5 straight games, and had his 3rd multi-hit game in that span. He also had an RBI single back in the 3rd inning.
With 3 outs left to preserve the win, Robbie Palkert (Nebraska) closed the door on any potential Loggers comeback. He finished the 8th and 9th innings without allowing a baserunner and also struck out two batters. He fanned Connor Perry for the 3rd and final out of the 9th inning to secure his 1st win this summer.
Drew Avans started the bottom of the 1st with a walk, and later came around to score. Shane Selman (McNeese State) had an RBI for the 3rd time in 5 games, and tied the game after his single in the 1st evened the score at 1. Later in the inning, Daniel Schneemann (BYU) scored after a wild pitch to give the Rox the 3-1 lead in the 3rd.
Schneemann had his first multi-hit game in his 1st start this season. The San Diego native had a single and double, with the run scored. Tarantino was the only other Rox player to record two hits, but it didn't matter. The Rox batters did just enough to secure their 13th win, and move to within 1.5 GB of the North Division lead.
The Rox have one more home game tomorrow against the Loggers before going on the road again. Sunday is Father's Day at the ballpark! There will be a Rox BBQ apron giveaway to the 1st 350 guys at the game and one lucky fan will win a new BBQ grill! Tomorrow is also Coborn's Kids Day! Saturday's St. Cloud Times Player of the Night is Matt Tarantino. The Rox 3rd baseman went 2-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.
