We are now two weeks into the Northwoods League season and it’s been, in my opinion, the most unusual start to a NWL season in the eight years I’ve been involved. There have been a lot of rainouts and suspended games, not to mention the flood in Waterloo. It just doesn’t feel like summer yet, and I guess officially it isn’t. As we approach the official start of the summer season in just over a week hopefully we’ll begin to see the consistently great weather that this part of the country is known for. Trust me, people wouldn’t put up with the winters if the summers weren’t so great.

Two games were rained out last night, Thunder Bay at Brainerd and Alexandria at Mankato. The game in Mankato got to the fourth inning before being suspended. The game in Rochester between the Honkers and Huskies was called in the eighth inning but at least they got it in. Rochester beat Duluth 11-0.

I’m off to Mankato for tonight’s 12 to13 innings of baseball. I’m going to be broadcasting on Alexandria’s webcast for Andrew Tichy, the second-year voice of the Beetles. Andrew took over for me a couple years ago when I left the Beetles and began working with the Northwoods League. Andrew and I both graduated from Browerville High School, a small town and school in central Minnesota. The Broweverville/Eagle Valley High School baseball team advanced to the Minnesota State Tournament this year for the first time in history. Andrew’s younger brother plays on the team so Andrew went to watch him compete for the state title. Browerville lost this morning 5-1 to Red Lake Falls HS. They’ll continue playing this afternoon in the consolation bracket with a game against Mayer Lutheran.

If you’re interested, to listen to my broadcast or any of the audio only webcasts you can find them from the Northwoods Radio page. I’ve learned that if you’re watching a video cast and your favorite team is on the road, you can open both the video cast and the audio you want and possibly have them match up perfectly. You’ll want to mute the video by right-clicking on the screen and selecting “mute” in the “volume” menu. If the audio is ahead of the video (which is likely), see if there is an option to pause the audio briefly and then press play. So let’s say the radio announcer says that the batter fouled a pitch off, press pause right after that. Wait for the video to show the batter fouling the pitch off and then hit play immediately. I can’t guarantee that this will work for every team’s webcasts but hopefully it’ll work for most. Please email me if you have questions about this or anything else website or Northwoods League related. There is a lot of stuff going on right now but I’ll try to answer your question in a timely manner.
