(Wausau, WI)The Wisconsin Woodchucks have announced the signing of California Baptist catcher Sharif Othman for the fast approaching 2010 summer. The Lancers’ standout backstop Othman, a 21-year-old Riverside, California native, is enjoying his third season at CBU where he is majoring in marketing.
“I am very excited to play in a prestigious league and team this summer, with great players and excellent competition,” said Othman on signing with the ‘Chucks.
If Othman’s numbers at Cal Baptist are any indication, Woodchucks fans should be in for quite a treat this summer. Through 34 starts in 2010, Othman is batting .325 with 5 HR, and 22 RBI while boasting a stellar .955 OPS. More importantly, Othman has a .986 fielding percentage while only posting 4 errors, on top of throwing out 45% of all would-be base stealers.
In recognition of Othman’s stellar sophomore campaign last season, he was named to the All-GSAC team and earned GSAC Gold Glove accolades. His .335 batting average, team-leading 7 HR, 40 RBI, and 58% caught-stealing rate opened many eyes, and doors, for the young switch-hitting phenom. Something must also be said for his wealth of experience, as only mid-way through his junior season Othman has already accumulated 120 starts in his collegiate career.
As a battle-tested veteran, Othman is doing more than posting eye-popping stats this season, as he has led his team to an already impressive 28-9 record. Said Othman on his junior campaign at CBU, “This year at Cal Baptist we have made a name for ourselves and the program due to our hard work and dedication, and…hope to be a top contender in the NAIA World Series.”
The Wisconsin Woodchucks are a member of the prestigious Northwoods League, a college wood bat summer league featuring players from across the country. Baseball America named the Northwoods League as one of the premier summer collegiate baseball leagues in the country.
