The month of August began with the busiest day of the Northwoods League season on Monday, as all 18 teams played doubleheaders for a total of 18 games played on the day. There were plenty of big performances throughout the league with a near no-hitter, two grand slams in one inning and a seven-RBI game from one player.

Battle Creek 12, Kalamazoo 10 – Game 1

The Battle Creek Bombers came back from four runs down to beat the Kalamazoo Growlers 12-10 on Monday afternoon. Kalamazoo scored four runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 9-5 advantage after four innings of play. The score remained the same until the top of the seventh when the Bombers scored four runs, capped off by a two-run homer from Eric Gilgenbach (Notre Dame) for his second home run of the game and fourth of the season. Battle Creek broke the tie with three runs in the top of the ninth, and Kalamazoo scored one in the bottom half of the inning in the two-run loss.

Battle Creek 2, Kalamazoo 0 – Game 2

The Battle Creek Bombers shut down the Kalamazoo Growlers 2-0 at home on Monday night to complete the doubleheader sweep. Battle Creek's starting pitcher Chi-Ping Wu (National Taiwan) threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed four hits and one walk with six strikeouts to earn the victory. The Bombers scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning, and leftfielder Daniel Jipping (Central Michigan) hit a solo homer in the seventh for his ninth home run of the season.

Rockford 10, Madison 9 – Game 1

The Rockford Rivets scored eight runs in the seventh inning and held on to beat the Madison Mallards 10-9 on the road. Rockford scored one run in the top of the first, and Madison answered with three in the bottom of the inning. The Mallards held the two-run advantage until Rockford's explosion in the top of the seventh. The Rivets sent 11 batters to the plate and recorded four hits, were aided by two Madison errors for eight runs to take a 9-3 advantage. Madison scored three runs in the eighth, and the Rivets added a big insurance run in the top of the ninth to make it a 10-6 game. The Mallards rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth and left the tying run at second base.

Madison 7, Rockford 1 – Game 2

The Madison Mallards beat the Rockord Rivets 7-1 in the second game for the doubleheader sweep on Monday. With the game was tied at one after three innings, the Mallards scored the final six runs for the victory. Madison's starter Westin Wuethrich (Washington) threw seven innings and allowed one run on three hits and four walks with five strikeouts to earn the win. The Mallards recorded 10 hits, and four batters finished with multiple hits for Madison in the victory.

Lakeshore 6, Kenosha 2 – Game 1

The Lakeshore Chinooks came back to beat the Kenosha Kingfish 6-2 on the road. Kenosha scored a run both the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 victory. Lakeshore came right back and scored twice in the third inning to tie the game. The Chinooks took the lead in the sixth with a three-run homer from first baseman Matt Johnson (South Dakota State) for his seventh of the season. Lakeshore's starting pitcher Nick Lackney (Minnesota) threw seven innings and gave up two runs on four hits and six walks with four strikeouts to earn the win.

Lakeshore 10, Kenosha 5 – Game 2

The Lakeshore Chinooks doubled up the Kenosha Kingfish by a score of 10-5 on Monday night for the doubleheader sweep. Lakeshore finished with 14 hits in the game, and five batters recorded multiple hits. Chinooks' second baseman Matt Reardon (Florida Gulf Coast) hit 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, one run scored and a walk. Shortstop Owen Miller (Illinois State) finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Miller's college teammate Jack Landwehr (Illinois State) threw six innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk with one strikeout for the win.

Mankato 4, Rochester 0 – Game 1

After four scoreless innings, the Mankato MoonDogs rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth to beat the Rochester Honkers 4-0 on the road. Mankato batted around, as the MoonDogs sent 10 batters to the plate in the rally. Mankato starter Kody Rock (Mayville State) threw six scoreless innings and gave up three hits and one walk with six strikeouts in a no decision. Rochester's Alex Fagalde (UC Riverside) threw 7 1/3 innings shutout innings and allowed three hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts and finished with a no decision as well.

Mankato 3, Rochester 1 – Game 2

The Mankato MoonDogs completed a sweep of the Rochester Honkers with a 3-1 victory on Monday night at home. Rochester scored one run in the top of the first inning, and Mankato tied the game with a run in the second. The MoonDogs broke the tie with a two-run seventh inning. Mankato's starting pitcher Ricky Digrugilliers (Western Illinois) threw a complete game and allowed one run on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts to pick up the win. MoonDogs' designated hitter Jordan Washam (La Tech) hit 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, including a home run.

Wisconsin 9, Green Bay 8 – Game 1

The Wisconsin Woodchucks took down the Green Bay Bullfrogs 9-8 at home on Monday afternoon. Wisconsin's leftfielder Steven Mangrum (Virginia Tech) hit 2-for-4 with one walk, five RBI and two runs scored, including his fourth home run of the season, which was a grand slam in the fifth inning. Shortstop George Janca (Texas A&M) finished 3-for-4 at the plate one RBI. For Green Bay, Matthew Hoeg (Iowa Western Community College) hit 3-for-3 with three RBI and was hit by a pitch. Jonah Davis (University of California) and Brad Hamilton (Kent State University) both homered for the Bullfrogs.

Wisconsin 14, Green Bay 4 – Game 2

The Wisconsin Woodchucks connected on two grand slams in the fifth inning, as they completed the sweep over the Green Bay Bullfrogs with a 14-4 victory in Game 2 on Monday night. Wisconsin led Green Bay by two runs before exploding with an eight-run fifth inning to blow the game wide open for the Woodchucks. Wisconsin designated hitter Steve Passatempo (UMass Lowell) hit 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBI and three runs scored with a pair of home runs, including the second grand slam in the fifth inning. The other grand slam in the inning came from Javier Martinez (College of DuPage), who also homered twice with an incredible seven RBI.

Eau Claire 4, Wisconsin Rapids 0 – Game 1

The Eau Claire Express shut out the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 4-0 on the road on Monday afternoon. After six scoreless frames, Eau Claire scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, capped off by a two-run homer from designated hitter Austin Guzzo (Iowa) for his second of the season. The Express added another run in the eighth to make it a four-run deficit. Eau Claire starting pitcher Ryan Zimmerman (St. Thomas) threw seven scoreless innings and gave up three hits and one walk with two strikeouts to earn the victory.

Wisconsin Rapids 11, Eau Claire 8 – Game 2

The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters trailed by five and had two big innings in an 11-8 victory over the Eau Claire Express for the split of the doubleheader. Wisconsin Rapids was down 6-1 until the Rafters scored five runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. The Rafters also recorded a four-run eighth inning for some extra insurance runs. Rafters' third baseman Patrick Cromwell (Clemson) hit 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored, including his first home run of the season. Centerfielder Logan Mattix (Georgia College) finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored.

Willmar 14, St. Cloud 2 – Game 1

The Willmar Stingers blew out the St. Cloud Rox 14-2 in the first game of a doubleheader on the road Monday. Willmar scored six runs in the top of the second inning and scored the first 14 runs of the game as well. Stingers' first baseman Greg Lambert (Southern Illinois) hit 2-for-4 with one walk, five RBI and two runs scored, including a grand-slam homer in the second. Third baseman Brandon Perez (Southern California) finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored. Centerfielder Danny Pardo (Montevallo) hit 3-for-4 with two walks, three runs and one RBI. Corey Binger (Nebraska Omaha) pitched eight innings and allowed one unearned run on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts in the win.

St. Cloud 2, Willmar 1 – Game 2

The St. Cloud Rox beat the Willmar Stingers 2-1 in a pitcher's duel to split the doubleheader on Monday. St. Cloud scored one run in the second and third innings to take an early 2-0 advantage. Willmar scored its lone run in the top of the seventh in the loss. Rox starting pitcher Robbie Palkert (University of Nebraska) pitched seven innings and allowed one unearned run on six hits and one walk with two strikeouts to earn the victory. Reliever Brian Glowicki (University of Minnesota) threw the final two innings and struck out three batters for the save.

La Crosse 11, Waterloo 0 – Game 1

The La Crosse Loggers scored seven runs in the fifth inning in an 11-0 blowout over the Waterloo Bucks on Monday afternoon at home. La Crosse starting pitcher Mark Nowaczewski (Nevada) came two outs away from a no-hitter. He threw 8 1/3 scoreless innings and gave up one hit and three walks with five strikeouts for the win. Shortstop and leadoff batter Mason McCoy (Iowa) hit 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, including his fourth homer of the season. Second baseman Cullen Large (William & Mary) finished 2-for-3 with one walk, two RBI and two runs scored.

La Crosse 9, Waterloo 3 – Game 2

The La Crosse Loggers swept the Waterloo Bucks 9-3 with another dominating victory on Monday night. La Crosse finished with 16 hits in the game, and four Loggers' batters recorded three hits on the night. Shortstop ason McCoy (Iowa) hit 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and third baseman Kyle Plantier (UC-Santa Barbara) finished 3-for-5 with one run scored. Centerfielder Justin Wylie (San Diego State) hit 3-for-5 and scored two runs, while catcher Gavin Johns (UCLA) finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. La Crosse's Dave Smith (Long Beach State) threw six scoreless innings and allowed two hits and one walk with four strikeouts for the win.

Thunder Bay 11, Duluth 1 – Game 1

The Thunder Bay Bullfrogs dominated the Duluth Huskies in an 11-1 home victory on Monday afternoon. Thunder Bay recorded 13 hits in the game, and eight batters finished with at least one hit for the Border Cats. Shortstop Andy Weber (University of Virginia) hit 3-for-4 at the plate with one walk, two RBI and one run scored. Shane Shepard (North Carolina State) hit 2-for-6 and crushed his eighth home run of the season. The Border Cats used three pitchers and allowed just one run on five hits in the game.

Thunder Bay 6, Duluth 3 – Game 2

The Duluth Huskies scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning before the Thunder Bay Border Cats scored six consecutive runs to win 6-3 to complete the doubleheader sweep. Border Cats' starter Shannon Broussard (Cedar Valley) threw six innings and allowed one run on four hits and six walks with three strikeouts for the victory. Thunder Bay second baseman Bobby Honeyman (Stony Brook University) finished 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in a run and scored two more in the win.
