Recounting Willmar
The Rox recently completed a four-game series against the Willmar Stingers and have now played eight of their 12 scheduled games against the black and gold this season.
Saturday’s game saw Brock Toney surrender his first runs in the Northwoods League, and the Stingers put up seven runs in the first five innings. A combination of Lucas Harrington and Brandon Jaenke shut Willmar down for the remainder of the game, with both arms delivering clutch strikeouts and batterymate Carter Jorissen gunning down multiple runners stealing. After being held off the scoreboard through the first six innings, the Rox offense exploded for six runs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by two-RBI singles each from Tanner Recchio and Jackson Legg. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as St. Cloud was neutralized in the last two frames to drop the opener 7-6.
Sunday saw the Rox snap their four-game losing streak and get back on track, getting a 9-8 win. Despite not getting the same length as his last start, Hunter Poe threw five strong innings and kept the Stingers off the board. Brett White had his best game in a Rox uniform, driving in three runs and putting up two hits on the board, including a double. Carter Jorissen had another good performance with the bat and the glove, catching his third runner stealing in the series and getting two key hits. Alex Dupuy recorded two hits off the bench, including a clutch RBI double late in the game. Although the middle of the game saw the Rox bullpen falter, the trio of Adam Trevino and Brandon Jaenke shut down both Stinger threats to secure the win, with Jaenke earning his second save.
Monday was very different from the first two games of the series. Rox starter Ethan Felling continued to dominate, going four innings and struck out six Stingers on just three hits. The bullpen for St. Cloud was unable to keep the Willmar bats cool after Felling exited the game, and the Stingers took game three by a score of 8-5. Aidan Mouton had his best day with the Rox to this point going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk, and despite not recording a hit, Nolan Geislinger managed to boost his on-base percentage with three walks.
Tuesday was a dramatic roller coaster game that allowed the Rox to win the game 5-4. After going down 4-0 early, St. Cloud rallied to score four in the 2nd and 3rd innings to even the game. A late double steal attempt from Cole Decker and Jorge Gil in the bottom of the sixth allowed the Rox to take the lead and never looked back. After a bumpy start, reliever Lucas Harrington delivered arguably the best outing of his collegiate career, going 5.2 innings of work and allowed no runs and four strikeouts, turning the ball over to Brandon Jaenke in the ninth to slam the door.
Ferguson and Lamb Get First Starts
As the Rox look to cover at least 36 innings in less than 60 hours, field manager Nick Studdard turns to two of his blossoming right-handers to get their first starting assignments in St. Cloud.
Brady Ferguson made 16 appearances for Iowa this spring, and made five starts. Ferguson had a 9.28 ERA in 21.1 innings of work, but did strike out 23 batters. All of his starts were on the shorter side, with his longest one going three innings against Lindenwood in early March, allowing four runs on two hits and striking out three. This summer, Ferguson has made four outings, going 9.1 innings and sporting a 2.89 ERA. His last outing was his best, going 3.2 innings against Thunder Bay and striking out five while allowing just one hit.
Eli Lamb made 22 appearances for West Florida this spring but did not start. He pitched to a 5.74 ERA with three saves in 26.2 innings of work, striking out 24 batters. Thus far in Northwoods League play, Lamb has recorded 16 strikeouts in 11.1 innings of work, allowing just one run and six hits. He has two wins as well, and three of his four outings have gone for three or more innings.
Lamb was a transfer from LSU-Eunice and made only 3 appearances out of the bullpen.
Phenow Seeks Bounce-Back
Right-hander Tyler Phenow will look for redemption after a less-than-ideal start his last time out. He pitched on June 12 against Thunder Bay and only lasted 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits, walking three and striking out three.
Phenow’s last two outings had been pristine, including a seven-inning gem on June 5 against Minot where he allowed just three hits and struck out six. On the year, he has a 2.19 ERA with a 1.05 WHIP and has one loss on his ledger.
St. Cloud Sits at the Top
After the 5-4 victory over Willmar on Tuesday, the Rox stay ahead of the Great Plains West at 14-8 by four games over the 10-10 Badlands Big Sticks. They also maintain the second-best record in the Northwoods League, half a game back from the 13-6 Wausau Woodchucks, meaning St. Cloud also tops the Great Plains.
Across team stats, St. Cloud is 2nd in walks (146), 3rd in runs (166) and hits (193), 4th in batting average (.263) and on base plus slugging (.765), and 6th in stolen bases (65).
In pitching, the Rox are 5th in strikeouts (214), 7th in K/9 (9.89) and first pitch strike rate (57.8).
One-Man Wrecking Crews
Nolan Geislinger has crossed home plate 23 times, more than all but one player in the Northwoods League. Only Rochester’s Oliver Service has more, with 24. Tanner Recchio follows with 21, tied for 6th in the league.
Hunter Poe is second in the league in innings pitched with 23.2. Hunter Guenther of Eau Claire has 24.2, topping the league in that department. Poe is also tied for 2nd in wins, with three to his ledger.
Team Full of Versatility
With a cast of highly talented and moveable position players, the Rox coaching staff has taken full advantage of being able to move around men across the diamond while still producing quality defense.
Tanner Recchio has made appearances both in the infield and the outfield, making starts at second base and right field thus far in 2026. Recchio is expected to make his seventh start in the outfield on Thursday evening.
Tyler Holland and Jackson Akin have been super-utility players on the infield for the Rox. Holland has made starts at every position except first, while Akin has started at every position except shortstop, which is his natural spot.
Owen Estabrook, one of St. Cloud’s catchers, has been learning more steadily a new position at first base. Estabrook has made two starts at first while still platooning the dish with Carter Jorissen.
Recently activated Rox returner Alex Dupuy is the definition of a Swiss-army knife on defense. Dupuy has made starts at third base, shortstop, and left field in only a handful of games. Dupuy can play just about every position on the field, and can deliver solid innings as a bullpen piece.
