Recounting Thunder Bay
The Rox took on the Thunder Bay Border Cats leading into the Willmar series, but were unable to come home with a series victory.
Thursday’s game saw the Border Cats push across six runs early, and while the Rox tried to mount multiple comebacks throughout the contest, they weren’t able to match the might of Thunder Bay’s bats, leading to a 13-6 defeat. Brady Ferguson threw 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit and striking out five. Eli Campbell had his best offensive day in a Rox uniform, going 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and two runs driven in. Jorge Gil bounced back from an 0-for-3 in his Rox debut by posting two hits and scoring a run, and Tyler Holland stayed hot with two hits of his own.
Friday saw the Border Cats hot sticks carry over to the second game, giving the Rox back to back losses when allowing 10 or more runs since the final two games of 2025 against Mankato. After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second and tying the game at 2 in the third, Thunder Bay scored two runs in every inning from the fourth to the seventh en route to a 10-5 victory over St. Cloud. Adam Trevino stopped the bleeding in the eighth inning by posting a clean inning and getting his first work since Tuesday. Nolan Geislinger had a 3-for-4 day with an RBI, and Jackson Akin crushed his third home run of the season in the second.
Toney Tries for Three
Right-hander Brock Toney has seen a wealth of success as a starter this year for the Rox, posting two scoreless outings against Bismarck and Minot. He will try and make that three when he squares off with the Stingers Saturday.
Toney’s last start against the Hot Tots saw him strikeout eight men while allowing just four hits in four shutout innings. His first start was also four shutout innings against the Larks, and surrendered no hits.
Welcome Home Poe
The heralded leader of the pitching staff, right-hander Hunter Poe, will make his first start at the Rockpile on Sunday as he makes his fourth outing of the season. Poe has gotten better and better as the season has worn on, making his best start on June 7 against Minot. He went a team-high eight innings allowing just one run on on five hits and struck out five. Poe’s eight innings was his longest outing since April 17 when he tossed eight innings of two-run ball against Schreiner (TX) with the McMurry (TX) War Hawks.
Felling Gets Second Crack
After a successful first start, left-hander Ethan Felling will get his second bite at the apple when he starts Monday’s contest for the Rox against Willmar. He delivered four shutout innings in his last outing against the Hot Tots, allowing just two hits and striking out one.
Felling made five appearances out of the bullpen prior to his Minot start, going more than one inning in three of his five games. He allowed runs in just one of them, against Bismarck, and delivered hitless appearances in his first two.
We Meet Again
The Stingers are the first team that St. Cloud will face in a second series this year. In their earlier home-and-home four game set, the Rox won the first three, outscoring Willmar 22-10. The Rox dropped the final game, losing 15-6 on June 3 at Joe Faber Field.
St. Cloud has faced every team in the Great Plains West except the Mankato Moondogs, and the two won’t face each other until June 26.
Following the completion of the series, the Rox and Stingers will not play again until after the All-Star Break, and Willmar will not return to Joe Faber Field until July 24.
First-World Problems
St. Cloud’s loss to Thunder Bay in Game 1 was the first time the Rox have lost consecutively all season long, and the Game 2 loss marked the first losing streak of three or more games since a five-game skid from July 13 to July 21 of last season, with the All-Star break in-between.
Welcome To The Granite City
Joining the Rox for this series will be Aidan Mouton and Emerson McKnight. Mouton, a two-way player, will join the Kansas Jayhawks after 3 years with the LSU-Eunice Bengals. Mouton holds a career 1.89 ERA in 18 appearances on the bump, while batting an on-base plus slugging rate of 1.303 last spring at LSUE.
The left-handed pitcher McKnight is presently with from the Kansas Jayhawks, where he pitched 2.2 innings in his freshman campaign. The southpaw hails from Flower Mound, Texas, 15 hours south of St. Cloud.
The Rox are also expecting to have utilitymen Colton Rother and Garrett Shull join the team while back in Minnesota. Rother attended Western Oklahoma State this past season and is committed to Kansas for next school year. Rother hit just south of .400 for the 2026 campaign with 13 homers and 72 RBIs.
Shull has spent his first two years with Oklahoma State, helping guide the Cowboys to an appearance in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional, emerging out of the losers bracket and falling to eventual CWS-representative Alabama. Shull hit .226 on the spring, but hit 14 home runs and drove in 39 runs.
Freddy’s 150th
On June 11th, the Stingers defeated the Waterloo Bucks in a 14-13, ten-inning barn burner. The victory is Field Manager Freddy Smith’s 150th win as the man on the top step for the Stingers.
St. Cloud Sits at the Top
Entering play Saturday, St. Cloud has the best record (12-6) in the Great Plains West, and are tied with the Minnesota Mud Puppies (2-1) for the highest winning percentage in the Great Plains conference of the Northwoods League. Overall, the Rox have the second-best winning percentage among all Northwoods League teams, sitting approximately 45 percentage points behind the 11-4 Wausau Woodchucks, who were idle Friday.
Categorically, the Rox are near the top of the Northwoods League in a bevy of offensive statistics entering Saturday’s games.
- 1st in sacrifice flies (16)
- 2nd in runs (141)
- 2nd in hits (162)
- 2nd in runs batted in (119)
- 3rd in walks (115)
- 4th in hit-by-pitches (35)
- 5th in stolen bases (58)
- 5th in batting average (.264)
Team Full of Versatility
With a cast of highly talented and moveable position players, the Rox coaching staff has taken full advantage of being able to move around men across the diamond while still producing quality defense.
Tanner Recchio has made appearances both in the infield and the outfield, making starts at second base and right field thus far in 2026. Recchio made his seventh start in right field and his eighth start at second during the Thunder Bay series.
Tyler Holland, Jackson Akin, and Justin Lang have been super-utility players on the infield for the Rox. Holland and Lang have made starts at every position except first, while Akin has started at every position except shortstop, which is his natural spot.
Owen Estabrook, one of St. Cloud’s catchers, has been learning more steadily a new position at first base. Estabrook has made two starts at first while still platooning the dish with Carter Jorissen.
Recently activated Rox returner Alex Dupuy is the definition of a Swiss-army knife on defense. Dupuy has made starts at third base, shortstop, and left field in only a handful of games. Dupuy can play just about every position on the field, and can deliver solid innings as a bullpen piece.
